Setting impact goals

We give our clients all the advice and support they need to construct a balanced and effective impact portfolio. This involves aspects such as selecting the themes on which clients want to have an impact and setting investable goals with feasible Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Together we also decide which asset classes offer the right allocation opportunities.

Framework for objectives and impact

We work with a clear impact framework that contains all the elements of our services. In doing so, we also make use of the Theory of change framework to inventory the desired change.

With the aid of the Theory of Change, together with our clients we formulate the impact goals for their chosen themes and potential sub-themes. These can then be linked to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Themes, sub-themes and KPIs

Below we give an example of how themes can be worked out in more detail into sub-themes and KPIs based on the Climate theme. We assess the potential KPIs using several criteria, including relevance, measurability, investability and reliability.

Renewable energy

Generating clean, renewable energy via electricity and sustainable fuels and adding (grid) capacity.

Potential KPIs
- # MW of installed renewable capacity/clean energy produced
- # tons of reduced or avoided CO₂ emissions

Sustainable industry

Making the demand side more sustainable: production processes via e.g. energy efficiency.

Potential KPIs
- # tons of reduced or avoided CO₂ emissions
- # tons of reduced or recycled waste
- revenue (%) from sustainable products/services

Sustainable mobility

Making the demand side more sustainable: transport via e.g. energy efficiency.

Potential KPIs
- # tons of reduced or avoided CO₂ emissions
- # tons of reduced or recycled waste
- revenue (%) from sustainable products/services

Sustainable buildings

Making the demand side more sustainable: buildings via e.g. energy efficiency.

Potential KPIs
- # tons of reduced or avoided CO₂ emissions
- # tons of reduced or recycled waste
- revenue (%) from sustainable products/services

Advice on asset classes

After defining the KPIs, we advise clients on suitable asset classes for realising the desired impact. We apply an integrated approach and take all the criteria that the investments need to meet into account here. A formal framework containing the strategic decisions then serves as the first step towards translating the impact objectives into a tangible investment policy and content for the portfolio.

There’s a saying in Dutch, Kom verder, it means many things and it’s our business philosophy. It captures the way we work with clients but also the way we steer our investee companies to deliver shareholder value through active engagement.

Capital at risk. The value of investments and the income from them can fall as well as rise, and investors may not get back the amount originally invested. Past performance provides no guarantee for the future.
